The Issue

The Worcester State University Equestrian Team isn't just a club sport; it's a community that has transformed the lives of many young women. Our team is part of a cherished tradition of equestrianism—an art and sport that's given us friendships, growth, and a unique sense of empowerment. It's heartbreaking to learn that the university plans to cut our funding, a decision that threatens not just our team, but the accessibility of this beautiful sport to future students.

Our program has been instrumental in nurturing young talents and providing a safe space for women in sports. Riding is a dying sport, and our team stands as a beacon of hope and continuity for equestrianism at collegiate levels. The university's decision to cut the club sports programs, impacting women-led teams like ours, the dance, and cheer teams, feels like a step back from supporting diversity in sports. These cuts make it virtually impossible for us to afford lessons, compete in IHSA shows, or hire an instructor—all critical components for maintaining high standards and the spirit of competition.

The decision to cut funding is not just about money—it's about opportunities lost. It's about young people missing out on a chance to connect with horses, to build confidence, and to learn essential life skills like leadership, responsibility, and resilience. Our final IHSA show should not signal the end of an era but rather the beginning of dialogue and action. Our entire region and our zone chair support us, and we are pleading for the support of our community and university administration.

We urge Worcester State University to reconsider this decision. Let's work together to find solutions that allow our team, as well as other women-led sports, to thrive. Whether it's exploring alternative funding options, conducting fundraising activities, or alumni sponsorships, we need creative solutions to keep the equestrian spirit alive at WSU.

By signing this petition, you're standing with us to support the future of equestrian sports at Worcester State University. Help us keep our dreams, and our bond with this incredible sport, thriving for generations to come. We need your voice and your support!
