Reinstate Dr Alex George as UK's Youth Mental Health Ambassador

The Issue

Dr. Alex George, was appointed as the UK's first ever Youth Mental Health Ambassador on February 3rd, 2021. His mission was clear - support the mental health of young people across the UK. His removal from the post by the newly election government was unexpected and such a disappointment after the strides he has made in raising awareness and funding for youth mental health.

Dr. George has a rich understanding of these issues, being a former A&E doctor with a large following on social media amongst young people. His credibility and relatability allow him to effectively raise awareness about the importance of mental health, especially amongst the youth.

1 in 8 (12.8%) 5 to 19 year olds experiences mental health issues, contributing indirectly to the rising suicide rates among teenagers, which have tripled in England since 1981 (source: NHS Digital, 2019).

Taking this into account, it becomes clear that scrapping the role of the UK's Youth Mental Health Ambassador at this critical time would only deprive UK youth of a valuable resource and support system. We must ensure that young people are heard and advocated for, their mental health must be prioritised.

Our request is crystal clear: we urge the government to reinstate Dr Alex George as the UK’s Youth Mental Health Ambassador immediately. The wellbeing of our young people is imperative. Please, sign this petition to voice your support for Dr. Alex George and youth mental health reform.
