The Issue

After having my baby, I experienced first-hand how tricky the postpartum period can be and working locally as a doctor, I know I'm not alone in this. For most new mothers, it's a challenging time both physically and mentally. Statistics show that one in five women  in the UK develop a postpartum mental health disorder, such as postpartum depression or anxiety. And most new mums also struggle with maintaining a healthy weight and their fitness levels after birth.

Exeter once had crèche facilities at St Sidwell’s Point and Riverside Leisure Centres. These services played a vital role, allowing mothers to take a moment for themselves and focus on their physical health, which in turn supported their mental wellbeing. When these services were discontinued, (a very short sighted decision) it was a heavy blow to many mums who relied on these services as a lifeline for self-care and wellbeing.

Physical health directly impacts mental health, and at a time when a mother’s wellness is crucial not just for her, but for her family too, the absence of such facilities feels like a harsh setback. Crèches provide a safe space for children, enabling mothers to engage in much-needed exercise. They also foster a community of support where mothers can meet and share experiences, further bolstering their mental wellbeing.

Bringing back crèche facilities in Exeter’s leisure centres isn’t just a matter of convenience; it’s about providing essential support for new mothers which in turn could improve mental and physical health in the community ,potentially reducing pressure on other services like the NHS.

We call upon the Exeter City Council and the management of these leisure centres to recognise the critical role they play in supporting postpartum recovery and family / wider community health. By reinstating these facilities, they would be investing in healthier communities and nurturing environments for families to thrive.

Please sign this petition to urge the Exeter City Council to reinstate the crèche facilities at our leisure centres. Together, we can help ensure that every mother in Exeter has the support she needs to maintain both her physical and mental health.
