Reinstate Col. Sheyla Baez Ramirez — A Decorated Leader Unjustly Suspended
The Issue
Col. Sheyla Baez Ramirez is a trailblazer. The first woman to ever serve as garrison commander at Fort McCoy, she has given more than two decades of her life in service to this country. Her leadership, her decorated record, and her historic appointment should be sources of pride, not the grounds for controversy.
And yet, she has been suspended over a flipped portrait.
Let’s be clear: Col. Baez Ramirez was not accused of misconduct. No rule-breaking. No negligence. Simply a photo of President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that was briefly turned to face the wall. And now, a highly respected officer is removed from her command?
This is not justice. This is a double standard in action.
Col. Baez Ramirez has served in critical roles around the world, including Korea, Fort Bragg, and the Army Intelligence Command. She holds the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Korean Defense Medal. She is an accomplished leader, a role model, and a pioneer for women in the military.
We believe her suspension reflects more than just a reaction to a photo. It reflects a troubling willingness to sideline women leaders for minor or symbolic issues, while others are protected under far graver circumstances.
This sends a chilling message to every woman striving to lead in the U.S. military.
We demand that Col. Sheyla Baez Ramirez be immediately reinstated as commander at Fort McCoy. Her service deserves recognition, not retaliation. The Army must rise above politics, uphold fairness, and respect its own heroes.
Reinstate her now.
