Reinstate Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez

The Issue

Dear Members of the Chicago Public Schools Board of Education,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent decision to remove Pedro Martinez as CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Under Mr. Martinez’s leadership, CPS has made significant strides in addressing longstanding challenges while prioritizing the needs of students, families, and educators. His unwavering commitment to equity, innovation, and collaboration has not only enhanced the quality of education but has also cultivated a sense of trust and unity within our diverse community. From his initiatives to close achievement gaps to his emphasis on inclusive policies that empower underrepresented groups, Mr. Martinez has demonstrated the visionary leadership CPS needs to continue building on its successes.

The decision to remove Mr. Martinez by a mayor-appointed board appears to undermine the democratic transition underway in CPS governance. With a hybrid board and the full election of members on the horizon, such a significant and controversial action disregards the voices of Chicago residents who will soon have a more direct say in the future of CPS leadership. I urge the board to reconsider this decision and defer any major personnel changes until the full elected board is sworn in, ensuring that these critical decisions are made with the input and accountability that democracy demands. The board must demonstrate its respect for the democratic process and its commitment to the broader community it serves.

Reinstating Mr. Martinez as CEO would ensure the continuity of the progress achieved under his tenure, as well as appropriately locate decisions regarding his continued employment at CPS with the fully formed hybrid board. Removing him at this critical juncture risks destabilizing the momentum CPS has gained in improving outcomes for all students, in addition to undermining citizens' faith in our democratic processes.

Sincerely,
