Reinstate Adoption Fees at Albuquerque City Welfare

The Issue

In my work with rescue animals in Albuquerque, I witness the heartbreaking outcomes of offering free adoptions every day. I've personally rescued several dogs recently who were abandoned likely because the novelty of having a pet wore off. While the intention of the shelter to find homes for animals is commendable, the reality is that animals have become disposable commodities, handed out to anyone regardless of their capability or intention.

Despite the noble goal of clearing shelters, this policy often results in animals being subjected to inadequate care, neglect, or even abuse. Many of these animals end up living on the streets, enduring harsh conditions, or being used as props by panhandlers. It's not uncommon for these animals to be denied essential medical care or to be exposed to environments riddled with drug use and violence.

Reinstating a nominal adoption fee of $30 could serve as a necessary filter to ensure that only those who are genuinely committed and financially capable of caring for an animal take one home. This small fee would help ensure that the adopter has a fiscal and emotional stake in the animal's wellbeing, fostering a more responsible and nurturing environment for pets.

The absence of an adoption fee not only impacts the animals but also strains rescue organizations like mine. We tirelessly work to pick up the pieces, finding and rehabilitating animals that were carelessly given away. The burden is immense, and without systemic change, it remains a Sisyphean task. We are exhausted and it's time for the system to prioritize the welfare of these animals.

Please join us in advocating for the reinstatement of adoption fees at Albuquerque Animal Welfare. By doing so, you can help ensure these animals go to loving, capable homes where they are valued and cared for. Sign the petition to support a change that safeguards the welfare of animals and brings us a step closer to a more compassionate community.
