Reinstate 40mph speed limits on Birmingham roads

Reinstate 40mph speed limits on Birmingham roads
The Issue
Birmingham’s new lower speed limits are causing unnecessary traffic disruption and longer journey times across the city, even on “expressways” now limited to 30mph. These roads can hardly be called expressways when traffic crawls at city-centre speeds.
27 roads have been impacted by this decision. As residents and daily commuters, we pay our fair share of taxes and deserve efficient, well-planned roads. Instead, Birmingham City Council has burdened motorists with Clean Air Zone charges, parking fines, higher parking charges, and now slower limits, all while roadworks continue to block lanes and delay traffic.
The need to reduce a 40mph road to 30mph where there is strong pedestrian activity is justified. However reducing expressways to 30mph which have been structurally engineered to accommodate higher speed traffic and no pedestrian walkways makes no sense.
These changes were made without proper public consultation or communication, leaving many residents unaware and unable to voice their concerns. This lack of transparency is unacceptable.
Collectively, let’s call on Birmingham City Council to reinstate the 40mph speed limits on major routes and to engage openly with the public before making future transport decisions.
Let’s stand together for fairer, faster, and more sensible travel in Birmingham. They can ignore the voice of a few but not the voice of many.
