Reinstall the Christopher Columbus Statue at Columbus City Hall

Reinstall the Christopher Columbus Statue at Columbus City Hall
The Issue
Seventy years ago, in 1955, the City of Genoa, Italy, bestowed a significant gift to the citizens of Columbus, Ohio: a magnificent 22-foot-tall bronze statue of Christopher Columbus. This was not merely a statue but a great honor to our city’s very namesake, strengthening the historical and cultural ties between Columbus and Genoa. For over sixty years, it proudly stood before City Hall, admired by citizens and visitors alike as an emblem of our shared heritage and appreciation.
In July 2020, a decision was made by Mayor Ginther and the Columbus Art Commission to remove this cherished statue from its iconic position. This executive decision was made without consulting the citizens of Columbus, whose voices deserved to be heard regarding this critical piece of our local history and identity. The removal felt like an affront not only to the people of Columbus but also to the City of Genoa, who entrusted us with this remarkable gift.
Statues like this play a vital role in our community by sparking dialogue around history, culture, and identity. It’s essential to recognize and learn from our past, and the statue served as a medium for such reflection. Removing it took away an opportunity for education and understanding, essential elements in the collective growth of our society.
Reinstating the Christopher Columbus statue with appropriate context and educational materials could transform it into an educational asset, offering a way for schools and visitors to engage in meaningful discussions about history and the evolving narratives that shape our understanding of the world.
We, the concerned citizens of Columbus, call upon city leadership to respect the historical importance and symbolic value this statue represents. Reinstalling the statue, along with informative plaques and regular community events, will position it as a focal point for education and dialogue, helping bridge gaps and foster unity among our diverse community.
Join us in advocating for the return of this statue to its rightful place, where it can continue to be appreciated by current and future generations. Support this initiative to honor our city's history and ensure that our stories and heritage are truthfully told and preserved. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and bring back a part of Columbus’ identity.
