Rein in NTTA Toll Charges: North Texans Pay Up to $2,900 a Year Just to Get to Work
The Issue
North Texas families are being priced off their own roads.
At NTTA's current rate of 22¢ per mile with a TollTag, here's what it actually costs to commute five days a week (Source: NTTA toll rates, effective July 1, 2025):
- McKinney to downtown Dallas (Sam Rayburn Tollway + Dallas North Tollway): about $11.50 a day round trip — roughly $240 a month, $2,900 a year
- Frisco to Fort Worth (full Sam Rayburn Tollway): about $200 a month — roughly $2,400 a year
- Collin County to Las Colinas or DFW Airport (SRT + George Bush Turnpike): about $280 a month — roughly $3,400 a year
- Don't have a TollTag? You pay DOUBLE. ZipCash pay-by-mail drivers are charged 44¢ per mile — the same commutes cost $4,800 to $6,800 a year, and that's before late fees stack up (Source: NTTA)
That's thousands of dollars in after-tax money, every year, just for the privilege of getting to work — on top of the gas taxes and vehicle fees North Texans already pay. These aren't luxury trips. For families in McKinney, Allen, Frisco, and Little Elm, the free alternatives add 25–40 minutes each way, so the toll road isn't a choice — it's the only realistic way to reach jobs in Dallas, Plano, Irving, and Fort Worth.
All told, NTTA collected $1.2 billion in tolls in 2024 — nearly double what it collected in 2015 (Source: NTTA 2024 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, Table A-6).
10- year Revenue growth chart:

We call on Governor Greg Abbott, Texas’s U.S. senators, the state senators and representatives serving North Texas, the Texas Legislature, the Texas Transportation Commission, NTTA’s Board of Directors, and the commissioners of Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties to take immediate action to:
- Pursue meaningful toll rate reductions — with a path to elimination on paid-off corridors.
- Freeze further increases until an independent financial and affordability audit is completed.
- Require strong State of Texas oversight of NTTA’s toll rates, spending, debt, fees and executive compensation.
- Require voter approval before major future toll increases can take effect.
- Create monthly toll caps or commuter discounts for Texans who depend on toll roads to reach work.
- Develop a long-term state plan to refinance, restructure or assume NTTA roads and debt so tolls can eventually be reduced further or eliminated.
- Require clear public reporting showing where every toll dollar goes and when each toll road is expected to be paid for.
- Reform NTTA's governance so the unelected nine-member board — appointed by the four member counties and the Governor — answers to the toll-paying public, through elected representation or direct voter accountability.

Transportation should connect Texans with jobs, schools, healthcare and opportunity. It should not cost a family thousands of dollars every year simply to move around its own community.
Sign this petition and demand affordable tolls, enforceable state oversight and taxpayer approval before future major toll increases.
