X (formerly Twitter) has become a megaphone for MAGA extremists, Russian disinformation, and hate speech, thanks to Elon Musk’s selective enforcement and algorithmic manipulation. The EU and Nordic countries must hold X accountable before it further destabilizes democratic discourse.

Under Musk’s leadership, X has:

✅ Allowed Russian bot networks to operate freely, spreading propaganda against Ukraine (Reuters​, WSJ).

✅ Turned into a safe haven for hate speech, selectively enforcing bans depending on Musk’s personal and political preferences.

Case Study: Kanye West’s Hate Speech & Selective Moderation
Kanye West (Ye) went on a 72-hour antisemitic, racist, and homophobic tirade, using slurs and praising Hitler. He was not banned, and later posted that he was thankful to Elon Musk for not banning him. Meanwhile, regular users get banned instantly for far less offensive content. (The Guardian).

This double standard shows that X’s content moderation policies are not based on ethics, but on Musk’s personal relationships and business interests.

Case Study: Promotion of Fraudulent Cryptocurrencies
Influencers and even political figures have used X to promote dubious cryptocurrencies, leading to significant financial losses for users. For instance:

• Argentine President Javier Milei endorsed the $LIBRA cryptocurrency, which subsequently crashed, resulting in millions of dollars in losses and calls for his impeachment (The Guardian).
• Scammers have exploited images of public figures, such as Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, in crypto investment scams on X, deceiving users into fraudulent schemes (The Guardian).
• Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, has actively promoted meme coins while attempting to evade legal accountability by calling himself a "collector" rather than an investor. Despite advising followers not to invest, he repeatedly posted contract addresses and hyped up low-market cap tokens. His involvement in tokens like $LIBRA and $GREED resulted in massive losses for his followers, with $GREED crashing 99% after he sold his holdings. (Cointelegraph​, Decrypt).
• Trump-affiliated figures promoting crypto scams: Ryan Fournier, chairman of "Students for Trump," promoted the "TikTok Coin" as an investment opportunity, misleading his followers into believing it was an official cryptocurrency. Shortly after the coin launched, its value collapsed, with Fournier selling his holdings and causing investors to lose an estimated $19 million (Reddit). Similarly, Trump-affiliated individuals launched and hyped $TRUMP and $MELANIA meme coins, which initially surged but later lost over half their value, leading to congressional investigations into potential financial fraud (Banking.Senate.gov).

Despite these incidents, X has been slow to implement effective measures against such fraudulent promotions, allowing scammers and influencers to exploit users, resulting in substantial financial harm.

How This Threatens Europe

• Musk & Trump’s Influence on X → Trump wants to force Ukraine into a “peace” deal where the U.S. takes $500B in rare earth minerals without offering security guarantees. X amplifies these narratives to weaken EU support for Ukraine. (Justice.gov)
• Musk’s Selective Bans & Algorithm Manipulation → His personal biases dictate who gets banned, shadowbanned, or amplified. This erodes fair discourse and democracy.
