Make vet fees clear and fair — CMA: don’t dilute price transparency
The Issue
Last summer I was hit with vet bill of over £1,000 for dental treatment on Roxy, one of my two pugs. No clear estimate. No way to compare prices. Just pay up.
I’m not alone. When our pets are family, we feel pressured to accept fees without question. That shouldn’t mean bills that come as a shock.
I came home from the vets that day and I thought, 'this is wrong'. We shouldn't just be accepting any fee. We need to understand it, and it should never come as a shock.
That’s why I launched this petition to call for clear, fair and transparent disclosure of vet fees.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is looking at vet pricing right now. It has proposed “remedies” - like making clinics publish price lists, giving clear price information up front, and improving the Find a Vet website so owners can compare.
That’s progress, but the CMA is consulting instead of implementing — and the big corporate groups will be lobbying hard to influence the outcome.
We need the CMA to act — fully and fast.
What we’re asking for:
- Mandatory, itemised written price estimates before treatment (except genuine emergencies).
- Published price lists online and in-clinic, including consultation fees and typical ranges for common procedures.
- Real enforcement with spot checks and fines for non-compliance, plus a simple way to report breaches.
Over 133,000 people have already backed this call. Add your name to insist on clear, fair pricing for vet care - so no one is ambushed by a bill again.
Sign and share now while the CMA is deciding.
