Every year, thousands of primates are used in laboratory experiments, often subjected to painful and distressing procedures. Much of this research raises serious ethical concerns. For instance, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), there are over 100,000 primates in U.S. laboratories alone in 2019. The reality of primate experiences in laboratory settings can dictate severe suffering and distress that goes beyond physical pain.

Whilst we acknowledge the role of scientific advances, it is critical we balance this with the ethical treatment of primates. We strongly urge governing bodies and research institutions alike to implement stricter regulations which ensure the humane and ethical treatment of primates in research facilities.

We call for more investment in the development and usage of alternatives to primate testing, which not only cause less harm and distress but can often prove more reliable.
