The Issue

Explosive fireworks have become a source of major disruption in our community. The loud, unexpected blasts, often resembling gunfire, are distressing not only to people but also to animals. As each detonation echoes through our neighbourhood, children wake up frightened, elderly folks experience distress, and pets tremble and hide in fear.

The reality is that fireworks are used not just on festival days but often randomly, adding unpredictability to their disruptive nature. Such disturbances have been linked to negative impacts on mental health—heightened anxiety, stress, and even trauma are experienced by community members. Our pets, with their sensitive hearing, are at risk of severe distress during firework displays. This is unfair and simply unacceptable.

Cities like Colchester have taken steps to limit fireworks use, enforcing strict time restrictions except on specific celebration days. We should adopt similar measures to achieve a balance that allows joyful celebrations while preventing unnecessary disturbances. Measures could include designated firework zones away from residential areas, specific hours during which fireworks can be launched, and promoting non-explosive alternatives such as laser or drone shows.

In our pursuit of addressing this concern, let's remember: it's not about banning fireworks entirely but ensuring they do not disturb the peace and safety of a community. We call upon local lawmakers and authorities to prioritize the well-being of all community residents. By joining together, we can push for reasonable regulations that keep everyone's enjoyment and safety in mind.

We urge you to sign this petition to demand immediate action to control the use of explosive fireworks in our community. Let's create a safer and more peaceful environment for everyone.
