Community Awareness:

 Caregiving Standards and Safety

We are deeply concerned about how caregivers are being trained and the type of individuals being placed in these roles. Caregiving is not a job to fill employment gaps or to assign to people simply because they are available. It is a profession that requires choice, skill, and passion, and those who care for our loved ones should want and love the work they do.

When unqualified individuals fill caregiving positions, it damages the industry as a whole. Families lose trust, the public stops taking professional caregivers seriously, and it disrespects those who chose caregiving as a career, lowering the value of skilled professionals who dedicate themselves to this work.

After COVID-19, complaints and reports of poor caregiving have doubled, especially as new entities began certifying caregivers. Many individuals are being certified without proper screening, training, or preparation, putting families and their loved ones at serious risk.

Example – Recent caregiver on a popular fb page.

* Certified as a caregiver but admitted she was “a little slow” and had difficulty understanding basic  instructions.
* Reported to have failed at many attempts in the practical & still being certified and recommended for jobs by HD.
* Struggled with even basic tasks for an elderly client with light care needs.
* Gave inconsistent information during interviews about her deceased parents, raising concerns about honesty.
* Could not maintain stable employment, leaving families without reliable support.

Bigger Concerns

* Some caregivers are certified without being able to read or follow medical instructions.

* Families reporting theft, abuse- &  neglect  connected to unfit caregivers.

* Caregiving treated as a quick job opportunity rather than a skilled, responsible profession.

Why This Matters:

Caregiving is a profession that deserves respect, standards, and professionalism. Entrusting unqualified people with caregiving not only endangers lives but also lowers the credibility and value of everyone in the industry. Those who dedicate themselves to this work deserve recognition, proper training, and professional standards.

Our Call

We are urging that proper regulations be introduced for the caregiving industry to ensure:

* Thorough screening and background checks.

* Literacy and practical skills requirements.

* Accountability and oversight for caregivers.

* Recruitment of individuals who choose and love caregiving as a profession.

What Families Can Do Now:

✅ Ask questions when hiring (check references, skills, and reliability).

✅ Support organizations that provide structured, recognized training.

✅ Share your experiences so others can make informed decisions.

✅ Join the call for stronger caregiving standards and protections.

Together, we can raise awareness and ensure that caregiving is respected, professional, and life-protecting work, valued by both the public and the professionals who dedicate their careers to it.
