The Issue

Living in our community during the Ganesh Utsav should be a time of joy and reflection, but instead, it has become a period of relentless noise that disrupts both sleep and work from home environments. The excessively loud speakers and booming DJ sets that are now synonymous with the festival completely overpower any sense of peace or enjoyment that should accompany such a cherished celebration.

Ganesh Utsav is a festival meant to bring families and communities together in harmony, honoring Lord Ganesha with spirituality and tradition. However, our society is experiencing the detrimental effects of loud music and DJ sounds that resonate through the night, affecting residents' well-being and productivity. Many people like myself are struggling to concentrate on work tasks or get a decent night's sleep. This constant barrage of sound is not only unhealthy but also unnecessary.

Statistics show that noise pollution significantly impacts mental health and general well-being. According to the World Health Organization, excessive exposure to loud noise can lead to stress, sleep disturbances, and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. These health concerns are a reality for many of us during the duration of the festival.

Other regions have successfully implemented reasonable measures to control noise levels without compromising the celebratory essence of the event. For example, cities like Mumbai have introduced noise control regulations that limit decibel levels during festivals. These measures help balance cultural traditions with modern urban living requirements.

We propose the following actionable solutions:
1. Enforce strict decibel limits for all loudspeakers and DJ equipment used during the celebration.
2. Promote traditional musical instruments and acoustic performances as alternatives to electronic amplification.
3. Designate specific time frames for high-decibel activities, ensuring residents can plan their schedules accordingly.

Together, we can campaign for a Ganesh Utsav that respects both cultural heritage and community needs. We urge the local authorities to take these steps seriously and enact regulations that will help reduce noise pollution during the festival period.
