In just one month, 365 Canadians have signed this petition calling for stronger protections for children and youth online.
That is 365 people who recognize that social media platforms are deliberately designed to keep young users engaged for as long as possible — often at the expense of their sleep, self-esteem, and mental health.
But 365 is not enough to create real political pressure.
This petition calls for federal legislation requiring:
- Transparency in how algorithms prioritize content
- Limits on engagement-driven design features
- Mandatory built-in time limits enabled by default for users under 18
This is not about banning social media. It is about protecting children from preventable harm.
Our next critical milestone is 1,000 verified signatures.
When we reach 1,000, I will formally submit this petition to the federal ministers responsible for digital policy, industry, health, and justice and request a direct response outlining what actions the Government of Canada is prepared to take.
Without sustained public pressure, nothing changes. Platforms will continue operating exactly as they are.
If you believe children and youth deserve better, now's the time to act.
Please:
- Send it directly to other parents
- Post it in school and community groups
Every signature counts!
Our children are growing up inside systems engineered for engagement, not well-being.
They can't change that alone.
We can.
