Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for signing and supporting our petition. We have now reached 230 signatures, and the response continues to grow.
This momentum matters because there is already strong Canadian evidence showing serious risks associated with social media use and digital engagement among youth.
Here are some urgent Canadian data points that explain why this issue cannot wait:
- Mental health and screen use
Experiences of cybervictimization, including online harassment or bullying, are linked to a three-fold increase in suicidal thoughts among young people.
(Mental Health Research Canada) - Widespread digital engagement
Young Canadians aged 15 to 24 spend more time online and on social media than any other age group, with most regularly engaging in social or digital media. (Statistics Canada) - Exposure to harmful and polarizing content
In 2022, 84 percent of Canadians aged 15 to 24 reported seeing online information they suspected was false, and 71 percent reported seeing content that may incite hate or violence, both far higher than the national average.
(Statistics Canada) - Cyberbullying prevalence
Between 15 and 25 percent of Canadian students aged 12 to 17 report being bullied or cyberbullied, and these experiences are associated with poorer mental health and lower well-being. (Public Health Agency of Canada)
These patterns suggest that social media algorithms and recommendation systems are not passive. They shape what youth see, how long they engage, and what kinds of content are amplified, including harmful or polarizing material.
That is why this petition calls for stronger federal oversight, transparency, and protections for minors.
Please consider sharing the petition with parents, teachers, community groups, and local networks. Every signature makes this concern louder and harder to ignore.
