Regulate Management Companies and cap ever increasing extortionate service charges.
The Issue
As a leaseholder, I have experienced firsthand the financial burden imposed by management company in charge of development where our flat is located.
These property management companies set out service charges demands which are unreasonably high and constantly increasing.
Our service charge was set at £850 a year at the time of purchase in 2018. Currently, it’s over £2000 a year, with additional demands for extra fees for repairs or previous years' overspending. This year alone, these extra charges have amounted to an additional £500 and it’s only April.
The service they provide is usually questionable and often any larger projects/requests/repairs take prolonged amount of time to complete, or are left unfinished.
These management companies increase service charges and add additional fees at every opportunity. They do this knowing full well that we leaseholders cannot protest or refuse to pay without breaching our leases or paying thousands in legal fees.
The problem is widespread and not limited to my personal experience. These management companies know that there are no laws or regulations in place to stop them from constantly increasing their fees. This lack of regulation leaves us leaseholders vulnerable and financially strained.
We need legislation that regulates these management companies and protects leaseholders from arbitrary increases in service charges. We call upon our lawmakers to take action against this unregulated industry practice which is causing financial hardship for many homeowners across the country.
Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment and protection for all homeowners against exploitative practices by unregulated property management firms.
