Regulate Event ticket sales in Canada

The Issue

We were recently sidelined by Ticketmaster. Despite being long-time Blue Jays fans, we faced exorbitant prices and were unable to secure tickets due to unfair sales practices. Our excitement turned into frustration and disappointment. We know we're not alone in this struggle. Many Canadians face similar issues when purchasing tickets for their favourite events, from concerts to sports games. Across Canada, ticket sales have become increasingly challenging, with practices such as dynamic pricing and ticket scalping leading to outrageous costs. Dynamic pricing allows prices to fluctuate based on demand, often skyrocketing beyond their initial listing. Additionally, ticket scalpers employ bots to snatch available tickets in seconds, only to resell them at a huge markup. This is not fair to the average fan who simply wants to enjoy an event without financial stress. Statistics show that nearly 60% of Canadians have had difficulty purchasing tickets at face value, reflecting a broken system that prioritizes profit over people. Countries like the UK have taken steps to regulate ticket sales by capping resell prices and enforcing stricter measures against bots. Why shouldn't Canada follow suit? We urge the Government of Canada to introduce regulations that ensure fairness, transparency, and affordability in event ticket sales. This includes implementing stricter penalties for scalpers, placing a cap on ticket resell prices, and mandating platforms like Ticketmaster to improve their purchasing processes to prioritize genuine buyers.\n\nThese changes will not only protect consumers but also ensure that artists and event organizers reach their genuine audience. Everyone deserves a fair chance to experience cultural and entertainment events without facing financial exploitation.\n\nSign this petition to call on our leaders to take action and create a ticket sales system that is fair and accessible for all Canadians.
