Register Burr Oak cemetery on the Illinois National Register of Historical Places
The Issue
Burr Oak cemetery was founded in 1927 in Alsip IL. The historic cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of individuals who faced segregation, discrimination, and racial violence while contributing in important ways to the city's and the nations vibrant-social, political, intellectual, and religious life. Among those who rest there are luminaries such as Emment Till, Mamie Till-Mobley, Annie Long, Dinha Washington, Earl Dickerson, Carl Hansberry and thousands of US Veterans who served in the nations wars.
Because of the contributions of those mentioned we have begun an effort to gain support for having Burr Oak cemetery listed on the Illinois National Register of Historical Places.
Having Burr Oak cemetery registered as an historical site will bring forth many benefits including assistance with preservation, heritage tourism, education, and awareness to the African American community, and the nation, while increasing awareness and appreciation.
We are requesting that you support this effort by signing our petition, and request others to do the same. Thank you.
