Why this petition matters

Started by Tanya Taylor
- A piece of forest between Nanaimo River Rd and Nanaimo River at the the most popular recreational area on the river is slated be logged. As per speaking with a Land Use Forester from Mosaic, building roads, followed by harvesting will begin Fall/Winter 2021. They will leave some trees along the river, and some “wildlife trees” as they are mandated to, but will basically be walking through a clear cut to get to the little patch of trees lining the river. The walk through the forest to get to the river is part of its magic and appeal. If it’s logged it will be devastatingly different and cause devastation to the flora, fauna and river itself. This area is used by hundreds, more likely thousands of people of all ages throughout the year for walks/hikes, dog walks, swimming; enjoying the amazing warm water in the summer, kayakers, divers, foragers, and simply to find some peace and relax. I have been a regular at this spot year round for 20 years and everyone who knows me knows I am passionate about this area. In the summer I have seen 100 + vehicles lining Nanaimo River Rd. There is always someone there no matter the season. People from other communities on the island come to Nanaimo to enjoy this spot! It’s a huge part of Nanaimo tourism and appeal in the summertime! This piece of forest is owned by Mosaic, so they have a right to harvest it no doubt. Mosaic has faced public opposition about harvesting this piece of land, which along with Covid has caused re-working of the falling boundaries. Even with more conservative boundaries it will be devastating. For those of you that know this spot, there is a falling boundary at the top of the steep hill down, so everything back from the top of the hill would be gone in that spot. Those of you that are interested, go for a walk there and you will see fresh falling boundary markers to give you an idea of what would be left. Part of the Trans Canada Trail runs through that property. There are historic coal mine remnants on that property thus harvesting could cause environmental damage related to the old mine. Land surrounding the beautiful Nanaimo River needs to be protected! It needs protection by the Regional District of Nanaimo. purchasing it as park area. There is no other way to save it. Thank you for your support!!!
