Thank you all for helping us get to 50 signatures. 50 is more than I could’ve hoped for if I had just left a paper petition behind a ticket machine at Pointe Orlando like I was originally planning to do.

Addressing the elephant in the room, Coronavirus has begun to mess up the release schedule, with No Time to Die, A Quiet Place Part II, F9, and a few others being postponed to a later date.

The first release attempt for No Time to Die already has indicated that no IMAX 70mm prints would be struck for the film, despite some 30 minutes of the movie being shot in that format. Both Wonder Woman 1984 and Tenet would have a better chance of being released on 70mm, as Warner Brothers has been more open to releasing their movies on traditional celluloid in recent years than other studios have. Tenet is almost guaranteed to revive a 70mm release, as is the norm with Christopher Nolan titles. With Coronavirus creating holes in the IMAX release schedule, this could give Regal an opportunity to close the IMAX auditorium at Pointe Orlando for a few days/weeks to reinstall an IMAX 70mm projector.

Laser, on the other hand, takes about four months to complete installation. Regardless if Regal decides to go with single or dual laser, the standard for IMAX laser renovations is to replace the projectors, screen, sound system, and any other renovations the theater chooses to do at the time such as seats or lighting. A renovation is already in the books some time before the end of this year. With so many huge titles being released this summer (given they aren’t postponed due to Coronavirus) Regal would not want to close their IMAX for four months any time soon and miss out on all those big IMAX releases. The IMAX release schedule has some big holes in it after Tenet, giving Regal a four month window to complete a laser renovation in time for No Time to Die’s new release date in late November.

And of course, I have brought this petition to the attention of Regal Cinemas and IMAX Corporation. Neither of them have explicitly acknowledged this petition’s existence, aside from “we have noted your feedback”. Either they are ignoring us, which would be very low of them to do, or they are taking the time to internally discuss the matter before issuing a response. Let’s hope it’s the second one.

While I do feel like 50 signatures is enough for Regal and IMAX to seriously consider respecting their customer’s wishes, a few more signatures surely wouldn’t hurt. Especially Orlando/Central Florida residents, our signatures will matter most to them. My fellow Orlando residents, make sure to spread this petition like butter, especially to anyone who frequents this theater or is picky about presentation quality, like I am. Even if you’re just coming from Reddit and don’t live near Orlando, your help is most appreciated as well.

Thanks again.
