The Issue

In Norbury, a community already struggling with socio-economic challenges, the potential addition of yet another gambling establishment is deeply concerning. Merkur Slots Ltd has applied for a Gambling Licence at the former NatWest Bank, 1393 London Road, and this decision stands to adversely affect our neighbourhood. This area already has an overwhelming number of gambling outlets (four within a 3-minute walk), contributing to the broader issues of social and economic deprivation.

By permitting Merkur Slots to establish operations at this location, we are allowing the infiltration of our community through more gambling opportunities, potentially leading to higher rates of addiction, financial distress, and mental health issues among our residents. The prevalence of gambling outlets in deprived areas has been documented to amplify these issues, trapping individuals in cycles of poverty and despair.

These establishments often capitalize on the most vulnerable, sinking their roots deeper into communities that can least afford them. The implications for local businesses, community cohesion, and public health are severe and must be taken into account. A responsible decision by the Council needs to focus on revitalizing and uplifting our community, not burdening it with more opportunities for harm.

Merkur Slots Ltd has a track record of social responsibility failings after it failed to protect a cancer patient from excessive losses and, according to media reports, its staff bonus structure incentivises high machine revenue rather than responsible gambling. The adjacent Cash Exchange pawnbroker creates an immediate and obvious route to fund gambling losses.

The applicant proposes low staffing levels and no opening time restrictions, a recipe for loitering, acquisitive crime, and noise and disturbance to residents at all hours.

We urge Croydon Council to act in the interest of its residents and reject this application. Let us invest in businesses that enhance, not exploit, our community.

Sign this petition to call on Croydon Council to refuse the gambling licence application by Merkur Slots Ltd and protect our community from further harm.
