Reform Unfair Sentencing Practices in Marion, OH

Reform Unfair Sentencing Practices in Marion, OH
The Issue
I am a member of the Marion, OH community, a place where sex offenders and rapists roam free while individuals with addictions and non violent people are locked up for years. This is not justice; this is a gross misapplication of the law. The sentencing disparity in our community is shocking and unethical. A man who starved a woman to death , with gaping bed sores with maggots, riddled with bed bugs, was sentenced to only 2 years in prison while people with drug possession charges receive sentences upwards of 11 to 30 years!!!! There is a member of the community currently serving 28 years for drugs! He has served 10 years so far due to someone getting caught and then cooperating and setting up this individual by illegal practices and entrapment! This kind of punishment can only be described as cruel and unusual. Which is a violation of the constitution!
One such example that highlights this disparity involves an individual named Warner, who despite being a felon convicted for hit-and-run DUI, is being considered for reinstatement by our local government. Meanwhile, non-violent drug offenders are languishing behind bars.
According to the Prison Policy Initiative's report on sentencing disparities across the U.S., Ohio has one of the highest rates of incarceration for non-violent drug offenses (Prison Policy Initiative). We need reform now more than ever.
We demand change from our local government officials - we need fairer sentencing laws that reflect the severity and nature of crimes committed rather than disproportionately punishing those struggling with addiction issues. It's time we address these systemic issues head-on and fight against unjust sentencing practices in Marion.
Please sign this petition if you believe in justice and want to see an end to unfair sentencing practices in Marion, OH.
