Reform the Work Cover and NDIS Systems and Bring Justice to Disabled Citizens of Australia
The issue
My mother, like thousands of others, has suffered at the hands of our flawed Work Cover and NDIS systems. She was recently "evaluated" for her continuing eligibility for work cover by a psychiatrist with a history of being sued for misdiagnosis. How is that even allowed? Well, because they are money hungry.
This shows the inadequacies of the current system which places vulnerable people at risk of incorrect evaluations, potentially denying them the support they need.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) - a program meant to assist thousands of Australians in need - is not functioning as it should. The University of Melbourne found in a recent study that one in four people reported their situation had worsened under the NDIS, and one third said the NDIS had not helped at all (source: University of Melbourne, 2019).
I have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), am Autistic and have relatively severe mental illness. My mother- whom is responsible for my NDIS stuff- was called and asked to "catch up." The woman speaking to her was just trying to cut my funding -- of which I barely have. I don't have an Occupational Therapist, and only bought headphones with the money I got for consumables before they rang my mum and told her the plan to cut my funding would be active IMMEDIATELY before we could even spend the money for my needs.
Similarly, Work Cover, a system designed to support workers who are injured or become ill due to their job, is failing its purpose. Beyond Blue reports that every year, around 7,200 Australians are compensated for work-related mental health conditions, indicating a critical need for support (source: Beyond Blue, 2020).
These issues cannot continue to be ignored. It's crucial that we take a stand and demand immediate changes to these failing systems. Our loved ones' health and well-being are on the line. This is not just my mother's struggle, but that of thousands of Australians. This is sick. All of this is not something I'd ever be expected to consider even thinking about. This is not right, not how to treat disabled and impaired people. This is not okay.
We implore the relevant authorities to act immediately to reform the Work Cover and NDIS systems. This is not even the beginning of the rising issues within our government. Please, sign this petition. Help bring justice to the mistreated disabled citizens of Australia. This could put people's lives at risk.
