Reform the SEND education

The Issue

Echp’s were introduced in 2014 and due to better understanding of some disabilities they have increased from 2.6% to 4% which has caused failings in many counties to comply with the regulations. So we are calling for a reform on the current system which has become outdated and overstretched.

legal deadlines are not being met by LA’s with no accountability for this, yet parents face rejections if they are 1 day late on paperwork.

When an ehcp is agreed parents are then told there is either no place that can accommodate these needs or they are told their child is “inefficient use of funds” even though a place is there that is fit for purpose at that time!

Many even being left in limbo for over 1 year, some even more, to be given a place.

Often the resolve is to be in mainstream without accommodation that are in the legally binding ehcp.

Staff unavailable to perform things like an educational psychologist evaluation leading parents to pay private. Then being told a privately paid report is not valid as it was “paid for” as if it was “bought through bribe”!

Councillors discussing families in ableist, discriminatory fashion with no accountability for the language used with, by your own send code of practice and equality act, is a punishable offence.

Children with disabilities have a right, by your law, to an education, one that is fit for purpose NOT fit for statistics!

the councils are not being held accountable for their failings and this needs to change!

“Panels” who have never spoken to the parent or seen the child and have no background or experience on the disabilities are deciding these child’s future. Parents should be in these meetings so questions can be asked and the correct information about the childs needs is available.

wait times for appeals should be within weeks not months to years!

We propose a reform of the ehc plan process  ensuring children with disabilities are treated fair and equal and the end result is AN EDUCATION THEY CAN THRIVE IN. And a system that holds both LA’s and the government accountable should they fail their own standards and criteria
