Reform the Requirement for Four Years of Math in High School

The Issue

I have personally faced challenges in meeting the mandatory requirement of four years of Math at high school. It was a constant source of fear for me, thinking that my ability to graduate might be hindered my struggles with this subject. Ultimately, I persevered, but that doesn't mean this hurdle doesn't continue to exist for others like me.

This is not, however, just a personal issue. In today's world, technology continues to advance and automate a host of tasks previously dependent on extensive Mathematical knowledge. This raises the question, should math remain a compulsory subject for four years in high school?

You may be surprised to learn that research suggests not everyone is naturally inclined towards mathematics. According to a study by Dr. Michael T. Willoughby at the University of North Carolina, cognitive differences direct our natural capabilities towards certain skills and subjects (source: The University of North Carolina research). Now, it's about time that our education system recognizes this.

We aren't suggesting that Mathematics be removed entirely from the education system. We simply argue to have it be optional past a certain grade level and not be a barrier to graduation. This proposal aims to focus more on the strengths and interests of each unique student, rather than a one-size-fits-all mold.

By moving towards a flexible curriculum, we can encourage students to excel in their areas of interest, leading to increased motivation, involvement, and potentially laying the groundwork for a successful professional path. Please join us in advocating for a change in this antiquated policy and help us move towards a more inclusive, personalized education system. Sign this petition today.
