Reform the Ordinance to Allow Backyard Chickens in Middletown Township

Reform the Ordinance to Allow Backyard Chickens in Middletown Township
The Issue
As residents deeply invested in the welfare of our community, self-sustainability, and food independence, we are launching this petition to reform the local ordinance that currently prohibits the raising of backyard chickens in Middletown Township in Pennsylvania.
Backyard Chicken have many benefits, including:
- a cost-effective food source
- bio recycling
- natural pest control
- fertilizer
- waste reduction
- educational opportunities
- mental health benefits
Despite these clear benefits, Middletown Township regulations prevent homeowners from utilizing this resource.
According to the American Pet Product Association, 13% of American households owned chickens in 2020, up from 8% in 2018. There are an estimated 85 million chickens in households as of January 2024, making chickens the third most common pet in the country.
Almost all neighboring towns permit backyard chickens--except Middletown Township. Local municipalities that permit chickens include: Langhorne Borough, Langhorne Manor, Bensalem, Hulmeville, Bristol Borough, Falls Township, Lower Makefield, Yardley Borough, Newtown Borough, Newtown Township, and Morrisville, to name just a few. Even in the five boroughs of NYC, you are permitted to raise chickens.
We believe it's high time for a change. Let's follow in the footsteps of cities such as Seattle, Portland, and New York and our local municipalities that have already identified the value of backyard chickens and updated their laws accordingly. It's not just for us but for improving our community's sustainability, food security, and environment.
We, therefore, urge Middletown Township Zoning Board to amend the current ordinance and allow for backyard chickens in a safe and controlled way using regulations similar to those of our neighboring townships. In doing so, we would be promoting a resilient, sustainable, and food-secure Middletown Township. Your support will bring us one step closer to food independence and a sustainable future.
Please sign this petition to promote the reform of the local ordinance and to stand with us in the fight for food independence.
If you live in Middletown Township, please comment your neighborhood or street so that we can show the board that local residents are in support of this positive change.
