The Issue

My name Cory Kaschel. I am a single mother who has experienced the fear and terror of domestic violence firsthand. My battle is not just against an abusive ex-partner, but also an unresponsive justice system that leaves many victims like me unprotected. It was a day like any other when I had to drop off my daughter at her father's house because daycare was closed. While simply trying to remove my daughter's shoes I was accosted. He straddled me, trying to impose himself on me sexually. When I resisted, he strangled me right there, in front of our innocent child. In a further show of his control and dominance, he prevented my departure, took my phone and assaulted me while holding our daughter. I recorded the entire incident on my Apple Watch, which was time stamped. His charges went in front of a grand jury, and he was indicted on two accounts of GSI, strangulation, and domestic violence . On the first day of trial, the prosecutor came in and told me that I was not a credible person/that NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME and it was being dismissed without prejudice by prosecutor, Carl Felice in Cleveland, Ohio. This was not the first incident, and I’m sure it will not be the last.

The justice system that is supposed to protect us has failed. ABC News reports that more than 10 million women and men in the U.S. experience physical abuse annually, yet many of these cases fall through the cracks of our justice system, leading to tragic and sometimes fatal results. It is an absolute necessity to reform the justice system to provide better security and support for victims of domestic violence, especially for those situations involving children.

Let's take a stand against the injustice that countless victims are experiencing. Let's make sure abusers are held accountable, and let's ensure proper protective and restraining systems are set in place. Let's fight for a justice system that truly serves all, including victims like me, rather than one that perpetuates fear and danger. Please, sign this petition to insist for an urgent review and reform of the policies and procedures regarding domestic violence within our justice system.
