Reform School Policy No Disruption To Classes to Support Extracurricular Activities
The Issue
Extracurricular activities are more than just optional add-ons; they play a vital role in shaping well-rounded individuals. They provide students with opportunities to go beyond textbooks and classrooms, allowing them to develop important life skills while also enjoying a more meaningful and engaging school experience.
Unfortunately, strict regulations that prioritize the non-disruption of classes, Department Order 9, s. 2005 often limits students from fully participating in clubs, sports, inter-section competitions, and other organizations. While academics remain important, these policies unintentionally restrict students from experiences that enhance socialization, foster teamwork, and help them build memories that make school life more than just a routine. Participating in competitions, collaborative projects, and group activities helps students form bonds, gain confidence, and discover passions that cannot always be nurtured in regular class settings.
Equally important, extracurricular activities prepare students for the future. Skills such as leadership, time management, adaptability, communication, and critical thinking are often learned and strengthened in these environments. These are the very skills employers and communities value in the real world, making extracurricular involvement not only a source of enjoyment but also an investment in a student’s long-term success.
A balanced approach is needed—one that continues to uphold academic excellence while making space for extracurricular activities. This could include setting designated times for organizations and competitions or promoting policies that recognize the equal importance of co-curricular growth. By supporting these opportunities, schools can ensure that students are not only academically competent but also socially, emotionally, and professionally prepared for the future.
Extracurricular activities are not distractions; they are powerful tools for growth, social connection, and lifelong learning. Encouraging them ensures that education goes beyond academics, equipping students with the knowledge, experiences, and values they need to thrive both today and in the years to come.
As someone who is part of an organization, I am truly invested in the holistic development of students. It is disheartening to see the current policies in the Philippines regarding the non-disturbance of classes infringe upon students' opportunity to engage in valuable extracurricular activities.
Sign this petition if you believe students deserve both quality education and meaningful experiences that shape them into well-rounded individuals.
