Reform School Policies Toward Bullying and Enhance Special Education Support

Reform School Policies Toward Bullying and Enhance Special Education Support
The Issue
This petition stems from a deeply personal and heart-breaking event. My son, who has Autism, Tourettes, ADHD, and three learning disorders, was physically assaulted at his school. The vice principal failed to notify me and instead placed him on a bus, where he was further exposed to verbal threats involving a weapon. Despite the serious nature of this incident, the school did not seek legal action and the school police disregarded our concerns when they questioned why they needed to contact me. Another incident involved a nonverbal disabled child being physically assaulted by a teacher, demonstrating that my son's case is not an isolated event.
Sadly, these terrible experiences are not uncommon in many schools. Not only are bullying policies and procedures inadequate, but there is also a significant lack of resources for the special education department, leaving children with disabilities or health problems unsupported. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Education, over 25% of students with disabilities reported being bullied compared to 12% of students without disabilities (2016 National Crime Victimization Survey).
This petition seeks two key changes. Firstly, existing bullying policies and procedures in schools need to be re-evaluated and strengthened to safeguard all students, especially those with disabilities. Secondly, the provision of comprehensive guides for parents outlining all available services, and a clear breakdown for each Individual Education Plan, must be prioritized. This will help parents to provide the best possible support for their children.
We cannot let these incidents continue damaging the lives of our children. This is the crucial time that changes need to be made. Please, sign this petition and join the fight for safer, kinder, and more inclusive schools.
