Reform Ohio's Expungement Laws for First-Time Offenders

The Issue

My loved ones, like many others in Ohio, are living with the consequences of one-time mistakes that have forever altered their lives. Both first-time offenses. They were young black men in their 20s, with promising careers and bright futures ahead of them. But due to these charges, they now face a lifetime of hardship.

In Ohio, minor misdemeanors, traffic offenses, operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI), and first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence charges cannot be expunged from one's record. This means that even after serving their sentences and complying fully with parole requirements, individuals are denied the chance to truly start over.

This is not just about a few people; it affects countless individuals across our state who made a single mistake but are willing to change for the better. It is estimated that nearly 1 in 3 adults in America has a criminal record (National Conference of State Legislatures). This means millions could benefit from more forgiving expungement laws. California and other states have already made this decision.

We urge lawmakers to reconsider these stringent laws which prevent first-time offenders from getting their charges expunged upon successful completion of parole or sentencing terms. By doing so, we can give these individuals an opportunity at redemption - allowing them to contribute positively to society without being held back by past mistakes.

Please sign this petition if you believe in second chances for those who have shown remorse and commitment towards reforming themselves after making life-changing errors.
