Reform New York State Car Insurance Laws to Prioritize Individual Driving Records
The Issue
As a conscientious driver in Bronx, NY, I am deeply concerned about the current car insurance laws in our state. These laws unfairly penalize safe drivers by calculating premiums based on socioeconomic factors beyond our control such as age, location, credit score and the accident rates of other drivers. This approach is unjust as it forces responsible drivers to bear higher premiums for high-risk drivers.
The need for change is urgent given the already high cost of living in New York State. It's time we follow the example set by Illinois with their House Bill 4611 which requires insurance companies to base premiums solely on individual driving records rather than uncontrollable factors.
According to a report from Consumer Reports, auto insurers widely use non-driving related elements like education level and job title as factors when determining rates (Consumer Reports). This practice disproportionately affects lower-income individuals who may have clean driving records but are still subjected to higher rates due to these unrelated aspects.
Insurance should be a reflection of an individual's responsibility and skill behind the wheel - not an algorithm that fails to consider personal driving habits. We demand that New York State lawmakers reform car insurance laws so they prioritize individual driving records above all else.
