Reform Local Coroner Laws and Improve Minimum Requirement Standards

Reform Local Coroner Laws and Improve Minimum Requirement Standards
The Issue
My mother-in-law's tragic death in a single vehicle car accident shook our family to its core. Her husband was at fault for driving under the influence. The numerous errors that ensued due to lack of knowledge and proper training of the coroner exacerbated our pain and grief. Eggregiously, it was stated that the driver had been ejected from the vehicle but was found walking around at the scene with no suspicion of foul play. An autopsy was a vital necessity in this case. Unfortunately, the coroner did not deem it as needed. Death certificates are crucial records, but it appears there are minimal, if any, stringent regulations or training prerequisites for coroners. There is something seriously awry with this scenario.
In the United States, the requirement and training level to become a coroner varies widely, with some positions only necessitating a high school diploma (BLS, 2019). Other justice systems across the globe require coroners to have a greater degree of forensic medical knowledge and legal expertise to carry out their job accurately. It's high time we reviewed our local laws and enhanced the minimum requirements for those tasked with this grave responsibility. By doing so, we not only honor the lives lost but also ensure that each death certificate accurately reflects the circumstances surrounding the demise.
This must change. We call upon our local representatives to re-evaluate and reform the current coroner laws and requirements to prevent future missteps and oversights. Ensure that every life matters, and each death is investigated properly. Please sign this petition to implement higher standards for coroners and prevent more families from suffering unnecessary pain.
