Reform justice system handling of domestic violence cases

Reform justice system handling of domestic violence cases
The Issue
My name is Jocelyn Toennies and I am a survivor of domestic violence. I lived through abuse that no one should ever have to experience. When I finally found the courage to come forward, I believed justice would protect me — but instead, I saw how broken our system truly is. On July 10, I was assaulted by my boyfriend and sustained severe injuries that require surgery. Despite the seriousness of my case, he is being offered the opportunity to plea out with the Diversion Program. This feels like a slap in the face, not only to me but to countless other survivors who watch their abusers evade true justice.
The justice system is meant to protect the vulnerable and punish the guilty, but when it comes to domestic violence, it often falls short. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men have experienced severe intimate partner physical violence. Every year, thousands of survivors step forward, seeking justice, only to be met with a system that minimizes their trauma.
Abusers frequently receive plea deals, light sentences, or participation in diversion programs which allow them to sidestep full accountability for their actions. These practices undermine the severity of their crimes and prolong the healing journey for survivors. It's imperative that we reform how domestic violence cases are handled, ensuring abusers face appropriate consequences and survivors get the justice they deserve.
We need mandatory minimum sentences for domestic violence offenders to reflect the seriousness of their crimes. Diversion should not be an option for those who inflict physical, emotional, or psychological harm on their partners. Additionally, comprehensive support services must be readily available to survivors, providing them with the resources needed to heal and rebuild their lives.
Join me in calling on lawmakers, judges, and legal authorities to make meaningful changes to the justice system. Survivors deserve to see their abusers held fully accountable. They deserve a system that protects their rights and upholds justice. Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with survivors and demand reform in how domestic violence cases are prosecuted. Together, we can create a safer and more just world for everyone affected by domestic violence. Sign the petition now to make a difference.
