Reform Inn From The Cold to serve Newmarket's community effectively
The Issue
During a difficult period in my life,
I found myself Employed be the services of Inn From The Cold,
an organization purportedly dedicated to helping those without stable housing in Newmaket, Ontario.
However,
my experience,
much like that of many others in our community,
was marred by mismanagement and unprofessional conduct.
The very people who are meant to assist often wielding power, detrimentally,
belittling and, abusing their positions
- rather than empowering those who need support the most.
The facility is plagued by inoperable basic amenities like showers, lack of food for the community at points and a false authority over those it is meant to assist.
- making it difficult for individuals to maintain hygiene and uphold their dignity.
To add to these issues,
Inn From The Cold has become a hub for illegal activities,
Located at:
17837 Yonge St
which not only undermines the safety and well-being of the vulnerable populations it serves but also affects nearby establishments like Home Depot, Staples, Canadian Tire, and Jack Astor's,
- who have voiced concerns over rising homelessness and drug-related issues linked to this center.
Given these severe issues, it is imperative that decisive action is taken to reform Inn From The Cold.
I propose the following actionable solutions:
**[1] Implement a male-only management approach for any male shelter facilities to ensure a safe and entrusted environment;
** *[2] Assess the legal and operational status of Inn From The Cold and close down or reform if illegal activities are ongoing;
* **[3] Facilitate an open channel for community input regarding the operation and longevity of this drop-in center.**
Last year, Newmarket had over 3,400 people experiencing homelessness,
according to reports by The Homeless Foundation. This number necessitates efficient and effective resources,
not the disorganized and unsafe environments that only exacerbate the problem.
We must urge our local leaders to take immediate measures that address both the structural and operational deficiencies of Inn From The Cold, aligning closer with their mission to aid the homeless community.
Your support can lead to a turning of the tide where shelters become a beacon of hope and transition,
not a cycle of despair.
Stand with me to demand reform and accountability at Inn From The Cold.
Please sign this petition, and together,
let us advocate for a citizen-inclusive, transparent process that ensures safety, dignity, and respect for Newmarket's vulnerable residents.
