Reform Hacienda La Puente USD's Sexist Dress Code!

The Issue

Have you experienced sexism or been targeted for what you are wearing under the school dress code policy? If you have, tell us about your experience and sign this petition!

Every day, feminine students are targeted by admin and grown adults on campus for what they are wearing to school, whether it is showing their midriff or having their shoulders out. The school dress code discourages young females from expressing their self-confidence as it promotes a culture of sexism. School should be a place of diversity, to express yourself, whether it be through what you wear or anything else. The HLPUSD and Los Altos High School dress code policy enforces sexist stereotypes, further making it difficult for a feminine student to feel comfortable showing up to school in her clothes of choice.

The dress code reflects the sexist view that feminine bodies are vulgar or inappropriate, that boys/men will be “distracted” by feminine bodies, and that her appearance should be regulated. Adults on campus should prioritize students’ education rather than taking the time to interrupt a feminine student’s school day, force her to change her clothes and confiscate what she was wearing. They specifically prohibit clothing predominantly such as “Crop tops, Midriffs, Tank Tops, Spaghetti Strap Shirts, Off-the-shoulder shirts or shirts that expose shoulders.” If a student wishes to show midriff or have their shoulders out, then that should be THEIR choice, and in doing so, they pose no threat to any student or faculty member. All students should be free to wear what they want. Feminine students in the HLPUSD school district need your help to make a change. By signing this petition, you are helping us get a step closer to getting rid of the sexist dress code and allowing feminine students to take back control of their bodies and what they choose to wear.

This campaign to change HLPUSD's dress code is led by Marissa Castillo, a student in this school district. Her work is supported by the Ruth Project, a national gender equity advocacy organization.
