My personal journey as a survivor of domestic abuse has led me through a complex maze of family court procedures, where I have repeatedly been failed by the systems in place - CAFCASS, police and the courts themselves. The issues extend beyond my individual case and affect countless other survivors who find their traumas perpetuated within these halls intended for justice.

It's unacceptable that perpetrators are able to drag survivors back into family court repeatedly, causing emotional distress and a sense of powerlessness. This loophole must be amended immediately to limit the number of times a party can instigate proceedings without new significant evidence.

We also need to ensure that judges and magistrates are thoroughly prepared for every hearing, including reading all relevant documents. awareness and understanding of the case leads to more informed decisions, fairness, and justice.

Furthermore, we call for the prohibition of perpetrators speaking in court without legal representation. The presence and direct interaction with the perpetrator can be triggering for survivors. Requiring legal representation puts a buffer and limits the emotional strain on the victim.

Lastly, all survivors of domestic abuse should be entitled to legal aid. Without it, many are forced to represent themselves, putting them at a disadvantage and potentially jeopardizing their safety. Also leaving most of us financially crippled. 

Domestic violence affects millions globally. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced physical or/and sexual violence in their lifetime. Our legal system should be a safe haven for survivors, not a continuation of abuse.
