As a self-employed individual currently navigating the court system for accumulating points while driving for work, I have experienced firsthand the challenges of our current driving conviction system. The existing framework does not differentiate between points accrued from professional driving and those from social, domestic, or pleasure-related driving. This lack of distinction unfairly penalizes those who drive as part of their livelihood.

Professional drivers are on the road significantly more than average motorists, increasing their exposure to potential infractions. According to a report by the Department for Transport, commercial vehicles account for 30% of all road traffic in the UK (source: DfT). It is essential to recognize this disparity and adjust penalties accordingly.

We propose that fixed penalty notices be split into two categories: one for work-related driving and another for personal use. This change would ensure fairer treatment and support those whose jobs depend on being behind the wheel.
