We believe our current dress code is outdated and unfair. It restricts us from expressing ourselves through our clothing, specifically by prohibiting graphic t-shirts. This restriction seems arbitrary and not in line with the spirit of creativity and individuality that should be fostered in an educational environment, especial an arts school.

Moreover, many schools across the country have already reformed their dress codes to be more inclusive and less restrictive. For example, Portland Public Schools in Oregon revised its policy in 2016 to allow students greater freedom in their attire while still maintaining a respectful learning environment (Portland Public Schools Policy Handbook).

It's time for CIVA High School to follow suit. We are calling on the school administration to reform its dress code policy so it allows graphic t-shirts – an essential step towards promoting self-expression among students.
