The Issue

We are concerned parents with children attending schools at D300 who have witnessed firsthand the impact that unrestricted access to cellphones and social media can have on our young ones. It's disheartening to see them absorbed in screens rather than enjoying the lively socialization and focus that should characterize their school years, crucial elements for both personal and academic development.

We are aware the District commenced a review of their cellphone policy in January, a step which we, along with many other concerned parents, support wholeheartedly. However, we believe that this is the opportune moment to implement a much-needed reform, especially affecting Middle School and High School students. Our children should not be using or even having their cellphones during class time.

We propose that students put their phones in pouches during school. This way we will help them amass their attention towards learning and aid teachers in managing their classrooms effectively. Also, we should grant teachers the authority to enforce rules within their own classrooms, ensuring maximum engagement in studies rather than digital distractions.

Additionally, for those inevitable breaks during school hours, let’s offer constructive activities. Board games and fun group activities can significantly encourage our children to socialize face-to-face, nurturing essential communication and social skills.

Another aspect we have grave concerns about is cyberbullying, which has become increasingly prevalent with the pervasive nature of smartphones. The revised policy should incorporate stringent consequences for any acts of cyberbullying, protecting our children from the emotional distress it can cause.

All these proposed changes aim to cultivate an environment where our children can thrive academically and socially, experiencing a balanced childhood and adolescence. Implementing these changes is not merely a preventative measure but an essential step towards equipping our children with the best possible education and a healthier social life.

Join us in urging the District 300 officials to reconsider and reform the cellphone policy to better support both our children's education and well-being. Please sign this petition to ensure a brighter future for our students.
