Reform Cannabis Laws to Stop Workplace Testing

The Issue

Marijuana tests check for usage NOT for intoxication levels. THIS IS UNFAIR. Nobody should be permitted to be intoxicated on the job. EVERYONE should be able to freely uses substances that are LEGAL.

I was raised in Prince George's, a historically Black county in Maryland. Growing up, I learned firsthand about the injustices borne by people of color, particularly through the so-called 'war on weed'. I've seen and experienced the abiding discrimination against cannabis users, despite recent advancements in its legislation. Hence this petition.

In the light of the federal decriminalization of cannabis, it is high time that Maryland synchronizes its laws accordingly, to avert unnecessary workplace discrimination. Currently, Maryland employers are still permitted to test for cannabis use, despite it being legitimately employed for medical purposes by over 50,000 registered users in the state alone, as per the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission 2020 report.

It's all the more pressing when we consider how these laws disproportionately affect minorities. A 2020 study by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) found that despite similar usage rates, Black individuals are 3.73 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than their white counterparts.

Thus, we implore Maryland's state lawmakers to redraft the state's cannabis legislation. The updated laws should prohibit employers from testing for the plant, bringing the State practices in line with the recent federal decriminalization, and ensuring that individuals, especially people of color, are not unjustly targeted. With your signature, we can help end this lingering discrimination against cannabis and its users once and for all. Please, sign and share this petition.
