Concerns Over Local Business Viability Due to Inconsistent Council Regulations and Enforcement

The ongoing regulatory environment in Queensland is causing growing uncertainty and concern among small, locally owned businesses. Operators are increasingly fearful that raising objections to Council decisions may result in punitive measures, such as heightened inspections, fines, or delayed permit approvals. Many business owners already operate with narrow margins, making stability and predictability in regulations essential to their survival.

This is not an isolated issue and we have been contacted by dozens of operators all across Queensland since opening this petition. Many operators fear retaliation for raising concerns, with some reporting a hostile environment when engaging with Council staff. A pattern of dismissive attitudes, contradictory guidance, and a lack of transparency from Council members only exacerbates the situation, fostering frustration and eroding trust in the regulatory process.

The confusion surrounding development applications further complicates matters. Businesses seeking approval face significant financial uncertainty, as the costs associated with the application process remain unclear and unpredictable.

The agriculture business community is calling for a more transparent, consistent, and flexible regulatory environment that will allow small businesses to thrive. A particular concern is the difficulty in securing approvals for temporary structures, which is discouraging many landowners from pursuing legitimate opportunities due to the burdensome approval process.

Given the region's potential for growth, especially with the upcoming Olympics and the potential selection of Wyaralong Dam as the venue for rowing, it is crucial that the regulatory framework be updated to allow for the development of alternative housing and tourism options. A more flexible and clear approval process would enable businesses to meet the needs of a growing population while contributing to economic growth.

We urge the Queensland Government to adopt reforms, cut red tape and adopt processes that streamline approvals and provide clearer guidance, particularly for low-impact, environmentally conscious tourism initiatives. They also call for the immediate review of current enforcement practices to ensure fairness, consistency, and transparency in how regulations are applied across all sectors.
