After some “high power” in NZ government has decided to remove my active petition at parliament because it struck a nerve, I have now brought it to change.org to show the importance and need and to take it back into Wellington parliament.  

In New Zealand, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) was established to provide comprehensive, no-fault personal injury coverage for all residents. However, many individuals, myself included, are facing significant barriers to receiving the care and compensation we are entitled to. As citizens who pay into this system, we expect it to work transparently and supportively when we need it. Instead, the convoluted review and complaints processes often hinder access to rightful benefits.

Too many Kiwis suffer without proper medical attention, despite having accepted claims. Many struggle to receive necessary treatments and pain management, and some even resort to hiring expensive legal representation to battle for what should be theirs by right. Why is it that a system designed to care for us in our time of need requires us to employ lawyers just to get basic medical treatment? Imagine the toll of an injury magnified by the financial burden of legal fees when you’re already vulnerable.

We need an immediate reform of the ACC's review and complaints procedures. A vital step is to increase the independence of clinical reviews, ensuring unbiased decisions that truly reflect the needs of the injured. This means appointing independent healthcare professionals who are not influenced by ACC's corporate interests.

Furthermore, the provision of free legal representation for claimants is crucial. Legal costs should not be a barrier to receiving fair treatment and benefits. Having a lawyer should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford one, but a standard service guaranteed to all who need to advocate for their health and rights.

Every year, thousands of claims are subjected to review, yet many are denied due to technicalities or minor errors, often at the detriment of those already suffering. The independence of these processes is not just a necessity, but a moral obligation. It's time we insist the House of Representatives strengthen these processes to ensure fairness and equity in the system.
