The Issue

Dear Administration Team,

I am writing to express our concerns regarding the Fifth grade Social and Academic Transition class. First, we would like to acknowledge that Mrs. Denney is an exceptional educator who has consistently been kind, supportive, and helpful to students.

Nevertheless, we strongly believe the Social and Academic Transition class should be reevaluated and that its current structure may need to be substantially revised or discontinued. We understood the purpose of the course to be helping students transition successfully to middle school. However, the assignments and expectations do not always appear to align with that goal.

Based on the experiences shared by many students, the class has become a significant source of stress rather than support. This suggests a meaningful difference between the course’s intended objectives and the way it is currently being implemented.

We recognize that the Social and Academic Transition program is relatively new and appreciate the time and effort required to develop and refine a new initiative. Even so, the apparent gap between the course’s purpose and students’ day-to-day experiences warrants careful review.

If the class is discontinued, we respectfully propose reallocating the time to better support students’ well-being and academic needs. Possible options include providing at least 20 minutes of seated eating time for lunch along with at least 20 minutes of active recess or adding 5–10 minutes to each core class.

We respectfully ask the administration to consider these concerns and take meaningful steps to improve communication, course expectations, and the overall student experience. We want every student to succeed academically while also maintaining a healthy balance and a positive attitude toward learning.

Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration. We look forward to learning how ECA plans to review and address these concerns.
