I’m a student in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS), and like many others, I’m struggling with the new rule that requires us to put our phones in pouches for the entire school day. This rule frustrates students who maintain good behavior, and it seems more like a blanket punishment for everyone rather than a targeted solution.

This phone ban policy aims to control our behavior, but is it really the best use of our school's resources? Instead of investing in phone pouches, SCCPSS should consider channeling funds into more impactful areas such as increasing staff salaries, upgrading school equipment, improving the quality of our bathrooms and stairs, and enhancing sports facilities. These improvements could greatly benefit the entire student body and staff while fostering a better learning environment.

Let’s address discipline issues with a more balanced approach. Instead of forcing all students to lock away their phones, why not implement a system based on individual behavior? Those who consistently abide by the rules should not have to endure the same penalties as those who don't. Granting access to phones during free periods and setting clear guidelines for phone usage could promote responsibility and discipline without imposing unnecessary restrictions on everyone.

Moreover, the phone ban is unlikely to be effective in stopping behavioral issues. If vape detectors haven’t curbed vaping in schools, why should we believe that phone pouches will prevent misuse? Students are resourceful and may find ways to bypass the restrictions, rendering the policy ineffective and costly.

We should strive for a system that rewards good behavior and thoughtfully addresses misconduct. Let’s advocate for a sensible approach to phone usage in our schools, one that recognizes the differences in student behavior and responds accordingly.
