The Issue

For those of us who call Bangor's High Street in Gwynedd, our professional and personal home, the recent years have been a real struggle. My own small business has been a labor of love, serving the local community and being a key part of the social fabric of our town. However, increasing financial pressures, primarily in the form of high business rates, are pushing many of us to the brink, transforming our vibrant street into a worrisome ghost town.

Business rates in Bangor, Gwynedd have become disproportionately high, straining local entrepreneurs who are the heartbeat of our economy. The effects are more visible than ever; failed businesses mean empty storefronts, diminished foot traffic, and a dissipating sense of community. The High Street, once bustling with activity, is now shadowed by these deserted locations, which impacts not only the local economy but the spirit of Bangor itself. This situation demands urgent reevaluation and adjustment of the business rates to revitalise our beloved town.

A study by the Federation of Small Businesses highlighted that nearly one in five small business owners have contemplated closing due to high rates and financial strains. Bangor is no exception to this trend. When our colleagues are forced to close their doors, it has a ripple effect: loss of jobs, reduced town revenue, and a decline in local spending. By reassessing and reducing the business rates, we will not only rejuvenate the High Street but also bolster local employment and improve economic conditions in the region.

There needs to be an immediate review of the current rate brackets, taking into consideration the unique challenges faced by towns like Bangor. Utilising strategies such as providing rate reliefs, creating incremental rate brackets for small businesses, and planning regular evaluations based on the High Street’s economic climate can create a sustainable environment for businesses to thrive.

Bangor's future depends on the thriving of its local businesses. We call upon the Gwynedd County Council and the Welsh Government to act swiftly in reassessing our business rates. Let’s restore the heart of our community, energise our economy, and breathe life back into our High Street.

Join me in this initiative to save our High Street. Please sign this petition to urge our local government to reevaluate and reduce the business rates in Bangor, Gwynedd.
