The Issue

New Beginnings Child Care and Academy has been a pillar of the Detroit community since 1996, providing invaluable support and care to countless families. For nearly three decades, this institution has operated seamlessly, meeting all licensing requirements and continuously expanding to better serve our children and their needs. However, recent changes in the state's operation protocols have imposed unnecessary roadblocks, affecting not only the academy but also the community that relies on its services.

For many families, New Beginnings is more than a child care facility, it's a nurturing environment where parents and guardians feel confident that their children are safe and developing positively. The sudden closure has left parents scrambling for alternatives, often facing less desirable options or exorbitant costs. Staff members who dedicated years to fostering a supportive atmosphere have seen their livelihoods disrupted, further contributing to the economic impact on our community.

The recent procedural changes, including the newly implemented plan review process, have made it more difficult to establish or reestablish child care facilities. This barrier not only affects New Beginnings Child Care and Academy but threatens the entire Detroit child care landscape. The previous process, which relied on the licensed fire inspector for approval, was efficient and effective, ensuring that safety standards were met without unnecessary delays.

We believe that reverting to the prior procedure could swiftly help in expansion for future locations; A quick and efficient licensing process respects the long-standing history of quality that New Beginnings Child Care and Academy has consistently delivered. Also, reauthorizing New Beginnings' license, will restore much-needed support to families and professionals.

We urge the state to recognize the critical role New Beginnings plays in our community and to take immediate action in reestablishing its license, and removing the plan review process. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to a cause that supports accessible, quality child care in Detroit. Please sign and help us restore New Beginnings to its rightful place as a cornerstone of our community.
