The Issue

As an Ohio native, I’ve grown up cheering for the Cleveland Indians. The Chief Wahoo logo has always been a significant symbol, one that I still proudly wear. We must note that while some argue that the Indians name is disrespectful to Native Americans, numerous others, including Native Americans themselves, do not perceive it as offensive. According to a 2016 poll by The Washington Post, 9 out of 10 Native Americans said they are not offended by the Washington Redskins name, a parallel that can be drawn to the Cleveland Indians situation (Washington Post, 2016). This poll, albeit a few years old, shows that changing the name might not have been necessary in the first place.

Our love and nostalgia for the Cleveland Indians franchise transcend just a name or a logo; it's a feeling of connection, community, and camaraderie that binds us all together. Over the past century, the Cleveland Indians has not been just a team, but a reflection of the spirit of our city.

This petition aims to implore the decision-makers to reconsider the team’s name change and allow the Cleveland Indians to reclaim its rightfully earned spot in the hearts and minds of its fans. Let's reclaim our beloved franchise. Sign this petition to bring back the Cleveland Indians name!
