Bring the Championships of Cosplay back to Australia

Bring the Championships of Cosplay back to Australia
The issue
In early 2020, on top of the ever growing problem of COVID, we found out that ReedPop sold the Oz Comic Con event to Expertise Events. This in and of itself wasn’t an issue. What became an issue was finding out from Cosplay Central, a subsidiary of ReedPop, that Australia was now excluded from the Crown Championships of Cosplay as a result of the sale.
For many competition level cosplayers, and budding competitors, this was a devastating blow. Many, including myself, spend up to a year and sometimes longer working on our competition entry pieces in the hopes of being Australia’s champion and representing our country in the Crown at C2E2.
The Crown Championships of Cosplay is the most prestigious cosplay competition Australia has. While we do have other competitions, they are not quite at the same level nor offering the same prize as the Crown.
Participating in the Crown is a lot more than just winning. It’s also an opportunity to represent your country, it’s a chance to discover and meet new cosplayers from across the globe and explore cosplay in different cultures, it’s a motivation for us to work hard and hone our skills for the chance to be on that stage. Whether or not you won your state division didn’t matter, it was the honour to stand on stage among some of Australia’s greatest competition cosplayers and say “I did that!”
Beyond competing, many people (cosplayer or no) come to watch the Championships transpire in each state. It inspires others to try new skills, to build new things, and brings a great amount of joy to so many.
I ask ReedPop and Oz Comic Con (Expertise Events) to please strike a deal to bring Australia back into the Crown Championships circuit. Our cosplay community is not large, but it is growing. And we need this opportunity, we need the Crown Championships, to continue growing and improving, to motivate us, to drive us, and to help us be involved in the global cosplay community.
If a mutual agreement cannot be made between ReedPop and Expertise Events, then I put it to ReedPop to bring the competition back to Australia via an event which is suitable for them. I encourage ongoing contact with members of the cosplay community to negotiate arrangements that benefit all parties involved.
Please bring it back. For us.
